In 1948, after returning home from World War II, Bill Loding didn’t just start a business—he sparked a transformation. Drawing on his Army experience of keeping frontline troops fed under challenging conditions, Bill saw an opportunity to improve life at home. At a time when most households still relied on wood stoves, he introduced gas cook stoves and water heaters to the local community, laying the foundation for what would become Rural Gas.

As Rural Gas grew, it became one of Michigan’s leading independent propane suppliers, expanding to multiple locations to meet the region’s heating needs. By the mid-1980s, Bill’s son, Wayne Loding, took the reins, recognizing a growing demand beyond residential heating. He shifted focus toward supporting local manufacturing by expanding into welding equipment and industrial gas supply.

This expansion paved the way for the next chapter. In 1998, third-generation owner Jeff Loding took a bold step, founding GTW Welding Supplies as a separate entity to specialize in industrial, medical, and agricultural gas solutions. Moving away from bulk propane, GTW Welding Supplies became a trusted partner for businesses across West Michigan, providing high-quality gases, welding supplies, and expert support.

Today, as a locally owned and independent company, we take pride in supporting other local businesses, carrying forward a legacy of service, innovation, and commitment to our community.
